Pen Pal Party

Our class has had the opportunity to be pen pals with a BYU elementary education writing class this semester! It has been so much fun! As the semester comes to an end, we will be meeting with our pen pals on Friday from 11-12pm. We will play board games and enjoy cookies and milk.

If you have any board games that the students would enjoy-please send them with your child on Friday. Also, cookie and milk donations are gladly accepted! Thank you in advance!

Santa's Secret Shop

Our class will go down to Santa's Secret Shop this Thursday in the afternoon. If you would like your child to shop, please put the money in the envelope and send it with them on Thursday. Thank you so much!

Names on coats

Please remember to put names on all articles of clothing-coats, scarfs, gloves, etc. This will help Rock Canyon determine who's is who's when items are left on the playground.

Face painting

Hello all!
For the Halloween party we will be needing some parents to help out with face painting. The options will be very simple-pumpkins, bats, black cats, witches, etc. If you would like to help out, please let me know.

If you would not like your child to have their face painted, just let me know and there will be an alternative activity. Thank you so much!

Homework

The students will get the homework packet on Monday and it will be due on Friday. Our homework will always follow this pattern-they get it the first day of the week and they will turn it in on the last day of the week. I'm starting an external motivator to help them to become internally motivated to do their homework :) For each week they turn in their homework on time and complete, they will receive a token. When they have three tokens-they get an otter pop! It doesn't get any better than that!

Parents-please do all you can on your end to teach your child about the importance of developing strong homework habits. I'm so grateful for the support I've already seen! I don't like to give out too much homework because I think it can take away from family time if there is too much; but I do understand the importance of developing good habits at a young age. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about any part of what is expected of your child outside of class time.

Cubes

Our class has adopted a way to help us stay on task-cubes. Each day every student starts out with 4 cubes that they keep in their desk. When they are having a hard time staying on task-they lose a cube. Our goal is to have everyone have all their cubes at the end of the day. I love this new idea and I think it has really helped the students.

Some of the reasons why I love it
It is personal-they keep the cubes in their desk, where only they know the status of how many they've lost.
It is tangible-they literally can see how many cubes they have at any given time of the school day. Also, when they need to give me one they hand over the cube and physically make the connection of the consequence of their action.
I can quickly and quietly remind any given student that they want to end the day with all four cubes. Then, that child is able to do a 'self-check' and get back on task.
It's individual-You have four cubes and only your actions could change that. No one can make anyone else lose a cube.
Here are the consequences of losing one or more cubes
One cube-lose one minute of recess
Two cubes-lose 5 minutes of recess
Three cubes-lose 5 minutes of recess and Miss Bingham sends mom and dad a note home letting them know you had a hard time staying on task.
Four cubes-All of the above, and a visit with Mr. Nelson
